Discovering Ibiza

Date: September 27, 2004, 6:05 pm

I'm currently sitting in the front entrance of Ses Fontallas Plaza, a timeshare resort in Sant Antoni, Ibiza. We arrived on Saturday around 5:30 pm, but our start wasn't smooth. Due to technical issues with the plane’s cargo area, two pieces of our luggage didn't make it. We waited a considerable amount of time at the baggage information desk, only to learn our bags would arrive the next day.

Finally, we picked up our rental car, a VW Polo, from Hiper-Rent-A-Car just outside the airport. Not bad for around 158 Euros a week. Along the way, we stopped at a massive supermarket, which we dubbed the "Walmart of Spain," to grab some grocery essentials before heading to the resort in the dark.

Ses Fontanellas Plaza is a delightful complex nestled in the bustling tourist area of Sant Antoni. We're staying in unit 308, a one-bedroom with a partial sea view. It’s beautifully furnished with a mini-kitchen, comfortable bedroom, and a bathroom featuring a bidet?"still unsure how to use it, so I’ve humorously dubbed it the “boot-washer.”

I've claimed the living room with its cozy trundle bed, and the balcony offers a roomy retreat with a lovely sea view. After consuming restaurant fare for a while, it was refreshing to enjoy a homemade meal and a peaceful sleep.

Exploring Ibiza Town

Yesterday began with a pleasant breakfast on the balcony. Tired of waiting for our luggage, we ventured out just after noon to explore Ibiza. The town, with its hilltop fortress, captured our interest. We climbed up to enjoy breathtaking views of the harbor and the island's southern coastline.

I snapped countless photos and managed to wrap up my souvenir shopping in about 30 minutes?"Ibiza's pottery is truly captivating. I wish I could ship it all back to Toronto.

While descending from the fortress, I encountered a local family, possibly of gypsy heritage. Hoping to practice my people photography, I approached them in friendly Spanish. While the younger family members were open to it, the grandmother was quite the opposite, waving her arms and shouting at me to leave. So much for my first attempt at capturing human subjects in my amateur photography career.

After hours of exploring, we were exhausted and returned to our cozy apartment for a delightful dinner, followed by some Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien on the satellite TV before calling it a night.

Discovering the Beaches

We started early today, leaving around 10 am. The coast was bathed in sunshine, though darker clouds lingered inland. We explored seven or eight beaches on the island’s southwest side, spending a remarkable 3.5 hours at Cala d’Hort. This cove, with its sandy beach and stunning views of a towering 389-meter monolithic rock, was the highlight of our day.

We briefly considered dining at a local restaurant but, drained from the sun, opted to visit two more beaches before returning to our temporary home. One thing is certain: Ibiza is a breathtakingly beautiful place, and I'm eager to see more.
