Hello From Chicago - Part 3: Discovering Austrian Connections

This morning, we started our day early at 7 am. In the shower room, while joking in our Austrian dialect, we were surprised to hear a woman say in German, "Am I hearing Austrian being spoken?" She was in Chicago with her daughter, who works as a nanny in Boston. They were just visiting for the weekend. We were amazed to encounter a fellow Austrian in Chicago.
Feeling hungry, we walked to Clark Street, a popular spot in Lincoln Park. We stumbled upon "Austrian Bakery," open early with an array of beautiful baked goods. Austrian cuisine is renowned for its pastries and breads, especially the rye bread with its crispy crust, which is hard to find elsewhere. This bakery had it all.
Chatting with the owner, we discovered he was from the same province as us?"Styria, Austria, where Graz is the capital. He had completed his apprenticeship there, and Linda and I had gone to university in Graz. What a coincidence!
We relished a delightful breakfast of various breads and sweets. A young woman at the next table overheard us and, in German, asked if we were Austrian. She was from Salzburg and studying medicine in Michigan.
Within an hour and a half, we met three Austrians from three different provinces right here in Chicago. In Toronto, it can take years to encounter a fellow Austrian, so this was a delightful surprise.
Despite the cool, gray, and rainy weather, we decided to explore Chicago further and planned a visit to the Pullman Historic District.
