I’m back on the road, embarking on a brief escape from home. Awake since 5:00 am, I decided to pen my initial thoughts. With just a one-hour difference between Toronto and Chicago, I didn't bother adjusting my watch. Arriving at the Arlington Youth Hostel's free computer, I realized it was only 6:00 am, giving me more time to explore.

I've been wanting to come back to Chicago for some time. This is my third visit; the first was in 2001 with friends, and the second in April 2003 to meet my lifelong friend Linda from Austria. Time flies when you can say you've known someone for 30 years...

Linda, who now lives in Indiana, and I planned another reunion here. She's arriving today at 10:25 am via the South Shore Railway. This time, I chose to fly instead of the 15-hour drive or train ride from Toronto. Using my Airmiles for the flight was a smart move?"it’s just over an hour flying time. This makes for a budget-friendly weekend in a vibrant city without breaking the bank.

Yesterday, I flew out of Toronto's Pearson International Airport at 4:45 pm, landing in Chicago at 5:30 pm local time. O'Hare Airport, known for being the world’s busiest, indeed lives up to its reputation. After much walking, I finally reached the subway level and bought a 3-day visitor pass for $12. Chicago's public transit system, similar to New York's, is extensive and efficient. The elevated "el-train" running through the downtown area, known as the "Loop," showcases Chicago's stunning architecture from its early 1900s inception.

My destination was the Arlington House Youth Hostel, where I've stayed before. At $56 per night for a private room for two (with a shared bathroom), it’s a steal. Located in the charming Lincoln Park area, it’s just 15 minutes from downtown via bus or el-train. The journey from the airport took about 45 minutes to Washington Station, followed by a switch to the red line, arriving at Fullerton in another 10 to 15 minutes.

Typically proud of my navigation skills, I was thrown off by the darkness upon leaving Fullerton Station and mistakenly headed west, away from my destination. Unable to find assistance as most DePaul University students were unfamiliar with the area, I wandered 2 to 3 km in the wrong direction. Tired and with suitcase in tow, I caught a bus back east, eventually reaching Arlington House.

The hostel's vibrant community, featuring travelers of all ages in its bustling entrance and minimalist rooms, offers a nostalgic youthfulness. Despite initially planning to visit downtown, exhaustion led me to dine locally. Clark Street, bustling with various eateries, was where I enjoyed a hearty meal at Ranalli’s, indulging in soup, salad, and tiramisu. It offered a perfect moment to unwind and peruse the events calendar, contemplating the weekend's adventures.

Today, I woke up unintentionally early, excited to explore before meeting Linda at 10:25 am at Randolph Street Station. With a couple of hours to spare, I’m considering heading north by bus or south to the Old Town neighborhood near North Street.

The day promises to be interesting…
