Gilroy, CA: The Garlic Festival Extravaganza
A few weeks ago, I had the delightful experience of attending the 28th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, held the weekend of July 28 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy. Having heard about this renowned event for years, I accepted a friend's invitation to join. I joined approximately 123,000 attendees to explore an array of garlic-infused creations, from garlic french fries?"my newfound favorite?"to the adventurous garlic ice cream, which I did not try. The festival offers hundreds of garlic dishes and relishes to sample or purchase.
A highlight of the festival is the crowning of the Queen of Garlic. Chosen by a panel of judges, she showcases her talents, delivers a speech about garlic, and dazzles in an evening gown. The Queen and her court represent Gilroy at various events. Attendees can also enjoy the Great Garlic Cook-off, celebrity chef demonstrations, and arts and crafts displays featuring handmade items from local artisans. A special area is dedicated to children’s activities, ensuring fun for the whole family.
Founded in 1979 by Dr. Rudy Melone, the festival began as a fundraiser and has successfully raised nearly seven million dollars for local charities. Individual groups also run booths, collecting additional funds for their causes. The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, a non-profit organization, supports community projects and non-profit groups throughout Gilroy.
Situated just a few miles from San Francisco, Gilroy is located on California's central coast in Santa Clara County, known for its booming high-tech industry and commonly dubbed Silicon Valley.
