Our trip was not only spontaneous but budget-friendly. We prioritized affordability and aimed for at least two dives a day, along with indulging in fresh shrimp when possible. The north shore's famous Wall was our primary target?"a stunning 7-mile stretch known for its diverse marine life.
Where We Stayed
We found the perfect spot at a quaint nine-room hotel at Cane Bay, on the north shore. This location offered easy access to the Wall and featured one of the best restaurants on the island. With ocean views to die for, the sound of waves became our constant companion. Nearby, more dining options and our chosen dive shop made everything conveniently located.
Exploring the Island
Renting a car was essential for exploring the island efficiently. Arranging it beforehand made the process smooth, saving both time and money. Upon arrival, a representative greeted us at the airport, making the transition seamless. Leaving the car was just as easy: park, lock, and leave the keys inside.
Dive Spots Not to Miss
The north shore Wall is a must-visit. A short swim from the beach leads you to a drop-off starting at 50 feet, descending to 3,200 feet. Keep an eye out for black-tip sharks, manta rays, and spotted eagle rays as you explore.
Also, don’t miss the Salt River, boasting giant coral heads, caves, and vibrant marine life. We encountered numerous stands of black coral and an abundance of trunkfish.
On the west end, the wrecks are incredible dive sites. A tug and a ferry lie about 100 feet down, their structures vividly standing out and ideal for photography. Nearby, the Frederiksted Pier teems with marine life, with banded coral shrimp and spider crabs aplenty. Octopuses, often camouflaged, provided delightful surprises.
Beyond Diving
St. Croix offers more than just diving. The island is steeped in history, evident from its old windmills and former sugar plantations, hinting at its past economic life.
