Atlanta Aquarium: Dive into a World of Wonder
Looking to make a splash on your next family vacation? Head to the Atlanta Aquarium for an exciting and educational adventure.
Often dubbed "the new zoos," aquariums are increasingly popular attractions. The Atlanta Aquarium, also known as the Georgia Aquarium, was developed to draw visitors to the city and is a must-see in downtown Atlanta.
The aquarium's inception was the brainchild of Bernie Marcus. In November 2001, Marcus announced plans to fund and build this remarkable attraction. Situated on nine acres next to Centennial Olympic Park, the Atlanta Aquarium spans over half a million square feet and houses more than 100,000 animals in 8 million gallons of water. Construction took just 27 months from groundbreaking to the grand opening.
The building itself is designed to resemble a massive ship cutting through a wave. As you enter, you're guided by a "wall of fish" into a spacious atrium, from which you can explore five main galleries, each marked by distinctive signs and icons:
- Cold Water Quest: Experience icy exhibits and marine life from cold climates.
- Georgia Explorer: A lighthouse invites you to explore local aquatic life.
- River Scout: Discover a habitat with a cascading waterfall.
- Ocean Voyager: Peek through a window into an expansive ocean environment.
- Tropical Diver: Enjoy vibrant displays of reef fish on two video screens.
Each exhibit leads back to the main atrium, making it easy to explore all galleries.
The Atlanta Aquarium features approximately 60 habitats, with 12,000 square feet of viewing windows made of durable acrylic weighing 328 tons. The largest habitat is an impressive 263 feet long, 126 feet wide, and 33 feet deep, holding 6.2 million gallons of water. It was specially designed for whale sharks and hosts thousands of other marine creatures.
You can also walk through a 100-foot tunnel with one of the world’s largest aquarium windows, offering a breathtaking view of the whale shark habitat. Another major highlight is the 800,000-gallon environment created specifically for beluga whales.
Nature enthusiasts and ocean lovers alike will be captivated by the Atlanta Aquarium. Witness 100,000 creatures representing 500 species from around the world, all thriving in over 8 million gallons of fresh and saltwater. The Atlanta Aquarium is indeed an ocean jewel in the heart of Georgia.
