An American Journey: Vacation Misadventures
Summary
A year into our marriage, my wife and I embarked on what I deemed an epic journey. With our Sunfire packed with camping gear, we set out from British Columbia's valleys across the prairies toward Montreal. From there, we aimed to head south to Indiana and return west through the United States, planning to camp to save money. While I wouldn’t call our trip a disaster, it certainly came with unexpected challenges, teaching us valuable lessons about travel planning.
The Journey Begins
Our first challenge arose as we left the mountainous terrain of my youth and ventured into the prairies. The lack of trees became quickly apparent when we stopped for the night and found no firewood beyond a few old fence posts. Dinner consisted of cold canned food. Lesson one: Understand the natural resources of your destinations.
The next night in Manitoba, we selected a campsite from a travel brochure promising ample firewood, spacious spots, and showers. What it didn’t mention was the recent flooding that left behind a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. The buzzing swarms were audible from inside our car. Lesson two: Don't rely solely on brochures.
Forced to continue driving despite the late hour, we reached Ontario, had dinner at a restaurant, and realized it was too late to set up camp. Opting to sleep in the car at a rest stop, I quickly learned lesson three: A tall person doesn’t fit well in a Pontiac Sunfire’s driver’s seat. Moving to the back, lesson four emerged: Always check your sleeping surface. I awoke to find I had slept on spilled pancake syrup and soap, leaving our car with a lingering scent of sweetness and cleanliness.
Continuing the Canadian Trek
The rest of our Canadian journey went smoothly, though I must say the Ontario roads could use better planning. However, it was on our return to the United States that the true hurdles appeared: a tense interaction with a border guard, unprecedented weather in Minnesota, a surprise biker rally in South Dakota, and a forest fire in Wyoming.
Lessons Learned
The biggest takeaway from this adventure was the critical importance of thorough planning. Despite the mishaps, our journey was an unforgettable experience filled with valuable lessons and memories.
