Vacationing with the Kids: Tips for a Smooth Journey
You've chosen a destination that promises fun for everyone in the family. You've meticulously planned the trip details?"duration, accommodations, sightseeing spots, and perhaps some interesting stops along the way.
Excitement is in the air! But within thirty minutes (maybe an hour), you hear the inevitable, "Are we there yet?"
If you haven't prepared ways to keep the kids entertained, this trip could feel interminably long. As with anything, planning is crucial for success.
A child’s perspective is different from an adult’s. Two hours can feel endless, and the scenery outside isn’t usually captivating for young ones. Watching trees and highway traffic will quickly lose its charm, as there simply aren’t enough cows or interesting landmarks to keep them engaged.
Take a moment to consider your child’s personality and age. Does your child play well independently, or do they need interaction? Will they nap during the drive, and if so, is that a good thing? Napping might mean they’re wide awake at night when you need rest. And what about snacks?"do you want a sugar rush from junk food, or worse, an upset stomach?
So, what are your options? Think about what your child enjoys at home. While you can’t bring the backyard swing set, indoor activities might translate well to the car. Young children can play with their regular toys?"yes, the brightly colored ones you’re always picking up.
For older children, keeping them entertained becomes more challenging. Crayons and paper can work, as long as the paper lasts. If your child isn’t into drawing, what about video games? These are perfect for energetic kids who seem to think silence is unbearable. Some children have vivid imaginations and can create entire worlds around a single toy in their booster seat.
And for those who love TV, portable DVD players offer a great solution. Even if your vehicle doesn’t have this feature built-in, these devices can keep kids engaged with their favorite movies, helping them forget they’re en route to Yellowstone, Disney World, or Uncle Bob and Aunt Louise’s ranch in Arizona.
Have a wonderful vacation and drive safely!
