Exploring Toronto: A Traveler’s Guide
Toronto, Canada, is one of my favorite vacation spots. Living in Detroit, it's just a three and a half hour drive via the 401 highway after crossing the border.
Often referred to as the "New York City of Canada," Toronto indeed lives up to this reputation. However, it stands out for being cleaner and safer than NYC. Despite its large population, I've always been impressed by its cleanliness and sense of security, even when exploring the city at midnight.
You'll never run out of things to do in Toronto. Having visited over 25 times, I still find new and exciting activities alongside my old favorites.
Here are my top ten recommendations for must-see attractions and activities in Toronto:
1. Bloor Street Walk: Known as the Park Avenue of Toronto, Bloor Street is lined with upscale shops like Gucci and Prada, and the renowned Holt-Renfrew department store. While some items might be pricey, window shopping and people-watching are always free.
2. Queen Street's Quirky Shops: Famous for its funky vibe, Queen Street boasts hip clothing stores and independent record shops. Don’t miss the legendary Horseshoe Tavern, where all the great Canadian music acts have performed.
3. Chinatown Stroll: For dim sum, exotic herbs, and rare teas, head to Chinatown. The area offers authentic Chinese cuisine that goes beyond the typical North American menu, catering to Toronto's vibrant Chinese community.
4. Eaton Centre: Though I'm not typically a mall enthusiast, I love Eaton Centre. Modeled after Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, this six-story, glass-ceiling mall has over 285 stores. Be sure to try the poutine at New York Fries in the food court.
5. Subway Adventure: Toronto's subway is clean, safe, and user-friendly. Its two main lines, Yonge-University-Spadina and Bloor-Danforth, connect you to all major tourist hotspots.
6. CN Tower: Visit the top of the world's tallest freestanding structure, standing at 553 meters. The views are breathtaking, and the 360 Restaurant offers fine dining with a rotating floor, providing a panoramic view of the city.
7. Hockey Hall of Fame: A visit to Canada wouldn't be complete without experiencing hockey. Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame includes a special area dedicated to Wayne Gretzky.
8. St. Lawrence Market: Ranked among the top 25 markets globally, it features over 50 specialty vendors offering fresh produce, meat, cheese, and seafood. Don’t miss the St. Lawrence Market Juice Bar for freshly squeezed juices.
9. Kensington Market: Explore this vibrant area showcasing Portuguese, East Indian, Ethiopian, and Caribbean cultures. It dates back to Toronto's original settlement in the 1790s.
10. Little Italy Dining: For exceptional dining, head to Little Italy. Beyond its restaurants, the area offers lively nightlife, including Italian coffee shops, gelato, music bars, and even Latin dancing.
I hope these tips enhance your Toronto experience!
