Shopping in Pattaya: A Thrilling Experience
Shopping in Pattaya is a unique adventure, especially if you master the art of haggling.
Embrace the Shopping Spree
Even if you generally dislike shopping, Pattaya can change your perspective. Upon arrival, I find myself shopping almost daily, starting with a visit to a local 7-11 to stock up my hotel refrigerator. Besides the complimentary water bottles, I grab some snacks, beer, Pepsi, and Red Bull, ensuring I’m set for my stay.
Traveling light means I often need a few essentials. I quickly pick up shorts, t-shirts, and local toiletries, like Lux shower soap, at Mike’s Shopping Mall or the Royal Garden Shopping Plaza. Remember: never accept the first price. Bargaining is key, and if a vendor refuses your offer, walking away might convince them to lower the price. If not, you’ll likely find a similar item just a few steps away.
Exploring Electronics and Entertainment
The Big C Shopping Mall and Tuk Com (Com City) are great for electronics. Whether I need a tri-band phone for use in both Thailand and the US or want to explore the latest in pirated software and movies, these malls offer plenty of options. As a fan of Thai music, I often buy CDs, MP3s, and videos to enjoy during my stay.
The Vibrant Flea Markets
My favorite shopping spot is the local flea market, or "talat naht," open on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays on Soi Buakhao and South Road. It’s best to arrive early, around 9 AM, to avoid the midday heat. A bottle of water is essential as you browse under the canvas tarps.
Here, most items cost 99 to 199 Baht, roughly three to six US dollars. I often buy clothes for myself, family, and friends, as well as adorable outfits for my granddaughter for about $1.25 each. Vendors set up stereos and TVs, allowing you to test music and videos before purchasing, typically around $3 per item.
Unexpected Finds
In Pattaya, shopping is inevitable. Even during a casual stroll to dinner or a bar, something may catch your eye. While dining, street vendors might offer interesting goods. They can be persistent, but occasionally you’ll find something irresistible.
The Shopping Haven
Pattaya is akin to one giant flea market, with shops and vendors every few feet and numerous malls throughout the city. While large outlets are available, I prefer smaller markets where haggling is welcomed.
Even those who normally avoid shopping might find themselves drawn into the vibrant, affordable marketplace of Pattaya, enjoying every moment of the experience.
