Planning Your Flight: Timing is Everything

Living in Hawaii and frequently traveling to Thailand and other Asian destinations, I have the option of five airlines departing within a two-hour window. Four arrive around midnight, while just one touches down at 4 PM in Bangkok. Trust me, arriving in Bangkok at 4 PM instead of midnight makes a world of difference.

Japan, United, and Northwest Airlines all depart an hour or two later, with layovers at Narita Airport in Tokyo. Korean Airlines stops in Seoul. All these flights land around midnight, meaning it takes another two hours to clear immigration and collect luggage. While these airlines provide great service, their arrival times can be highly inconvenient. Only one airline manages a sensible arrival time?"and that's only available twice a week.

China Airlines offers two weekly flights arriving during daylight, perfect for catching dinner upon landing. How do they achieve this? Firstly, flights from Hawaii are scheduled on Thursdays and Sundays. Originally, there was also a Tuesday flight, but that’s recently changed.

Secondly, China Airlines routes through Tao Yuan Airport (formerly Chiang Kai Shek Airport), with only a one-hour and ten-minute layover, compared to the 4-6 hour waits with other carriers. A shorter takeoff time and reduced layover mean an impressive 8-hour earlier arrival. It’s nearly perfect: just enough time for a quick break before continuing the journey.

Don’t forget to check the return flight times as well. Most flights from Thailand to Honolulu depart around 8 AM, arriving in Hawaii by 6 AM the same day, thanks to the dateline adjustment. However, Korean Air's flight departs at 1 AM. For me, that's far from ideal due to a lengthy layover in Seoul, arriving back around the same time as other airlines.

Always double-check both departure and arrival times for your outgoing and return flights. Also, consider flights on different days of the week to possibly find a better schedule.
