Leave Your Homes and Run
What Would You Do if Authorities Ordered an Evacuation?
Imagine being told by city authorities that you must evacuate your home. Faced with two options?"comply or refuse?"neither is appealing. Evacuation often means packing your family, pets, and essentials into your car and navigating congested roads toward an uncertain destination. While inconvenient, choosing to stay can be a life-threatening gamble.
Certain disasters provide warnings and time for evacuation. Bushfires can swiftly reach suburbs, prompting urgent departures with little notice. In contrast, hurricanes can be tracked via sophisticated weather analysis and satellite imagery, often offering up to three days' warning.
For instance, prior to Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, New Orleans issued a mandatory evacuation two days before the storm hit. While many lacked the means to leave, some chose to stay, underestimating the danger.
This risky decision was partly due to the frequency of false alarms in the past. Many hurricanes had previously resulted in nothing more than heavy rain, leading residents to weigh the inconvenience of leaving against the perceived threat. With jobs, commitments, and the challenge of uprooting one's life, many opted to stay. Additionally, financial constraints and lack of transportation or contacts outside the city played significant roles.
A tourist summed up the miscalculation before the disaster: "They say it's mandatory evacuations except for the hospitals and hotels. So it can't be that bad."
Tourists unable to leave often resorted to “vertical evacuation,” seeking rooms in buildings that had withstood past storms.
Despite the disruption, it's important to remember that authorities do not evacuate cities without significant reasons. Nearly everyone who stayed during Hurricane Katrina regretted their decision. The lesson: when faced with an evacuation order, it's often wiser to heed the warnings and leave.
