Khon Kaen: The Gateway to Isaan
Discover the True Thailand Experience in Isaan
When most travelers think of Thailand, destinations like Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket usually come to mind. However, if you're looking for an authentic Thai experience, consider venturing to the northeast?"specifically to Isaan. This region, which includes Khon Kaen, Korat, and Udon Thani, is a blend of tradition and simplicity, and it offers a unique glimpse into rural Thai life.
Isaan is largely agricultural, characterized by vast rice fields. It’s also home to many expatriates who, drawn by the area's charm and warmth, have made it their new home alongside their Thai partners.
A Glimpse of Khon Kaen
My first trip to Khon Kaen was in 2007 when I visited a lady I had met online. Instantly, both the city and its tranquil atmosphere captivated me. Unlike the bustling tourist hubs, Khon Kaen provides a serene and authentic environment.
With a mere 55-minute flight from Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport, Khon Kaen is easily accessible. The small airport, with just two departure gates, reflects the city's cozy and unhurried vibe.
A Blend of Old and New
Khon Kaen offers a delightful mix of tradition and modernity. Dining here is a joy, whether in a quaint bungalow by the lake or along one of the rivers. A few delicious dishes, a couple of beers, and some water would set you back only $10 to $15.
For those seeking familiar comforts, there are Western fast food options like KFC and Pizza Company. But the local cuisine is what truly shines.
Shopping in Khon Kaen is a similarly diverse experience. Whether you’re visiting the bustling food or night markets or the more modern Fairy Mall or electronics center, there is something for everyone?"from T-shirts to DVDs.
Where to Stay
During my visit, I stayed at Cactus Resort?"a modest but comfortable hotel just a short drive from the city center. For about $16 a night, I enjoyed a room with cable TV, free Internet, hot and cold water, a spacious bed, a refrigerator, and air conditioning. The staff was friendly, and the service was exceptional. They even made sure I had extra bottled water, seeing I needed more than the standard two.
Although the hotel didn’t have a restaurant, dining was never an issue. My partner would cook breakfast and bring it to me; we’d enjoy lunch she picked up, and for dinner, we’d explore the local eateries.
A Place to Call Home
Life in Khon Kaen is relaxed and affordable, making it an ideal place to retire. I’m already planning to find a house on my next visit.
If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, consider exploring the northeast and experiencing all that Isaan has to offer. It's more than just a side trip; it's a journey into the heart of Thailand.
