Eating in Thailand
Introduction
When it comes to dining in Thailand, you have a delightful choice: savor the local cuisine or indulge in familiar fast food.
First Impressions
My first visit to Thailand was in 1973 as a young soldier stationed in Bangkok. After 18 months abroad, my first meal back in the U.S. was a Big Mac with fries and a Coke.
Fast Food in Thailand
Nowadays, Thailand is dotted with fast-food chains like KFC, McDonald's, and Pizza Hut, not just in major cities but in smaller towns like Khon Kaen and Phitsanulok. While I enjoy junk food back home, I often prefer local Thai fast food when in Thailand.
Local Delights
Street vendors are my go-to for quick, delicious meals that are far more cost-effective and flavorful than a local Burger King. However, after a few weeks, I occasionally crave a burger, fried chicken, or pizza. For my Thai girlfriend, dining at an American restaurant is a special treat.
Seafood and Local Cuisine
In Khon Kaen, fresh seafood is a must-try. Barbecued prawns with vegetables and rice are a perfect dinner choice, while my partner enjoys oysters and papaya salad. When we stay in for a movie, she loves ordering pizza and chicken wings?"pizza for me, wings for her.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast is typically eggs and rice with sausages, or sometimes Thai soup or pad Thai. Occasionally, we indulge in an "American" breakfast at hotels run by foreigners. Lunch is usually a snack; I enjoy chicken or pork BBQ with sticky rice, or spicy chicken from KFC, complete with a blueberry cheesecake dessert.
Dining with a View
We love the Khon Kaen restaurants near the lake or rivers. These spots offer small, thatched booths with stunning views, excellent food, and some even feature live local Thai music.
Conclusion
Thailand’s culinary scene offers the best of both worlds, from pizzas and cheeseburgers to fried rice and noodles. Great food at fantastic prices is just one more reason I adore Thailand.
