Our adventure began with plans to split our stay between charming motels in Bellingham and camping in the countryside just north of the city. We were visiting our daughter at Western Washington University, located in the vibrant town of Bellingham. Little did we know, this wouldn’t be your typical camping experience?"reservations were a must!
When we arrived at the campground amidst the picturesque rolling fields and dairy farms, it was a delightful surprise. Equipped with a fishing pond, tent areas in a small forest, a grocery store, a laundromat, and even a café, the campground far exceeded our expectations. Ideally situated, it offered easy access to Bellingham, the coast, and the mountainous splendor of Mount Baker and the North Cascades.
Discover the Coastline
From our campsite in Lynden, it was just a short drive to Bellingham. We took Chuckanut Drive along the stunning coastline to Larrabee State Park, nestled on the ocean side of Chuckanut Mountain. A beautiful trail led us through dense greenery to Clayton Beach. As a Montana native, I was in awe of the lush ferns and vibrant landscape. The beach, with the expansive blue waters of Samish Bay, offered stretches of sandy shoreline and an unparalleled sense of tranquility.
A Mountain Drive
Being from the mountains, I couldn't resist exploring the route to Mount Baker from our campsite. Although my family reminded me we experience mountains regularly, I was still captivated by the scenery. We discovered a scenic loop from Lynden to Deming, then up to Kendall, circling back through Sumas on the Canadian border, and returning to Lynden.

The area surrounding Bellingham abounds with recreational options. Whether you're interested in hiking, shoreline relaxation, or exploring charming towns, this region has it all.
