San Diego Beach Hikes: From Cardiff to Carlsbad
San Diego is a hiker's paradise with numerous captivating trails. With home prices averaging around $500,000, these hikes indeed live up to the hype!
Cardiff to Carlsbad Hike
One of my favorite ways to unwind is by hiking from Cardiff to Carlsbad along the beach. This stretch offers breathtaking sunsets and incredible waves, making it a must-do.
Starting Point: Cardiff
I usually kick off this hike by parking just south of Restaurant Row in Cardiff. This spot is conveniently located north of the lagoon between Cardiff and Solana Beach on Highway 101. Parking is right by the beach, so it's both accessible and scenic.
As you head north, you'll pass charming eateries like Charlie's. Beyond the restaurants, majestic bluffs begin to rise, marking the start of a beautiful journey. On top of these initial bluffs sits the popular San Elijo Campground, where locals and tourists mingle, easily spotted by their tans or sunburns.
Sea Cliff County Park and Swamis
Continuing north, you'll venture through Sea Cliff County Park, with bluffs towering over 100 feet high. Soon, you'll reach Swamis, a beloved surf spot named after the nearby Self Realization Fellowship Center. Here, you can take a break, watch surfers tackle the waves, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
Encinitas to South Carlsbad
North of Swamis lies Encinitas, where the beach stretches out, bordered by 50 to 60-foot bluffs. This area is perfect for a quirky game of "Watch the House Fall" as the bluffs gradually erode, causing some beachfront homes to precariously edge forward.
The long, tranquil Encinitas section is surprisingly quiet, even in summer. Moonlight Beach adds a sprinkle of local activity, but otherwise, you'll find solitude, seashells, and fellow beachcombers. As you reach the end of the bluffs at South Carlsbad, it's time to turn back.
Hike Details
The Cardiff to South Carlsbad hike covers about 5 miles each way. The trail is flat, making for a quick and relaxing walk. By the end, you'll feel refreshed and ready to forget about any workplace woes. Enjoy your coastal escape!
