An Unforgettable Fishing Adventure
Setting out before dawn on the calm Sea of Cortes, we had no clue what awaited us that day. The anticipation was palpable as our boat departed Cabo San Lucas?"it felt like a perfect day for fishing. I had spent the previous evening preparing wire leaders, dreaming of the wahoo we hoped to catch.
Our destination was the East Cape, renowned for a spectacular wahoo bite. After three hours of cruising, we finally set our lines. I arranged the outriggers, my friend Steve managed the cockpit pattern, and Captain Fernando expertly guided us to the fish.
The Big Strike
About an hour passed, and then it happened?"a massive wahoo strike! All four rods bent ominously, threatening to snap. We were using light tackle and even lighter lines, fishing purely for sport and planning to release everything we caught.
The boat erupted in excitement, the adrenaline was thick enough to cut with a knife. We quickly reeled in the lines without fish, focusing on the four we had hooked. We lost one due to error, but the first wahoo we landed was a hefty sixty pounds. Releasing these powerful fish takes skill, but with experience, it can be done.
A Day to Remember
Once the first hookup happened, it was as if the sea had ignited. We caught over 14 wahoo and 6 striped marlin, tagging and releasing each one. It was a day none of us would forget.
Fishing in Baja is an opportunity not to be missed, but remember to fish responsibly. Release what you don't need and always think about conservation. The ecosystem is fragile, and it’s up to us to help preserve it.
