Why Is the Atlantic Ocean So Appealing?
Introduction
Let's be upfront: this article reflects a personal bias. I adore the Atlantic Ocean and can’t imagine living away from it. Surprisingly, this perspective comes from my early years spent on the beaches of Santa Barbara on the west coast.
A Unique Perspective
Most Californians tend to stay close to their west coast roots, enjoying the beaches or nearby mountains. But my story is different, and I’m not alone in this sentiment. As you read on, you'll discover the unique allure of the Atlantic Ocean that captivates many, myself included.
Reflecting on the Pacific
Growing up on the west coast was wonderful, but certain experiences marred the tranquility of the Pacific Ocean for me. Key among them was the pervasive drug culture in California. The high cost of living and the constant threat of earthquakes contributed to significant stress. As a result, substances like cocaine and heroin were all too common, especially along the beaches. This environment was a trap for many, including myself, leading to lost opportunities and a longing for something different.
The Atlantic’s Appeal
Another reason I’m drawn to the Atlantic is the lesser emphasis on surfing, a sport I once cherished but now disdain. I lost someone dear to me in a shark attack while surfing in the Pacific. This tragic event left me with a deep aversion to the sport. Although east coast waters have their share of sharks, the colder temperatures and fewer waves make them less appealing for surfing, which suits me just fine.
Conclusion
For me, loving the Atlantic Ocean is more about a rejection of the Pacific's painful memories. Embracing the Atlantic is part of my journey to heal and move forward. Here, I find a sense of peace and hope for restful nights, away from past anxieties.
