Our Visit to Orchard Country Winery in Door County
Exploring Door County’s Treasures
Door County is brimming with activities and sights, making it challenging to decide where to start. From boating and golfing to exploring nature centers, parks, and enjoying delectable local cuisine, there's always more to see and do than time allows. As a frequent visitor, I want to share one of my cherished experiences: visiting Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery and Market.
A Delightful Stop at Orchard Country Winery
Wine enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in Door County, known for its charming wineries. One standout is Orchard Country Winery, conveniently located on Highway 42, just south of Fish Creek, Wisconsin. During a fall visit, this winery was a memorable stop.
Activities and Offerings
The winery grounds feature not only a bounty of fresh Door County cherries (in season) but also a main market offering a variety of specialty foods and freshly baked pies. Visitors can enjoy scenic trolley tours and winery tours. Seasonal activities include horse-drawn sleigh rides, haunted hayrides, and a winter wine fest.
Wine Tasting Experience
When we arrived?"my husband, our eldest son, and I?"it was late afternoon on a weekday. Though the last tour had ended, the wine tasting bar beckoned. With over 30 wines available, patrons over 21 can sample up to eight wines at no charge.
Famous for its fruit wines, particularly cherry, the winery also offers a unique grape wine named Audrey Grace. This dry wine is crafted from red grapes grown on-site, a recent addition to explore the region’s cool growing conditions.
Savoring the Flavors
While Orchard Country specializes in fruit wines, they also create offerings from imported juices, such as the semi-dry Swedish Lingonberry wine. Our tasting favorites included:
- Autumn Harvest: A cranberry-apple blend
- Sweet Cherry: Made from local cherries
- Strawberry Lyte: A lighter-tasting delight
- Blackberry Blend: Sweet and reminiscent of ripe blackberries
- Red Raspberry Lyte: A refreshing mix of white grapes and raspberries
The Blackberry Blend is the winery's bestseller, followed by Red Raspberry Lyte. Cherry Blossom remains their top cherry wine.
Bringing Home Treasures
After sampling, we stocked up on our favorites to enjoy at home, allowing the flavors to transport us back to the charming moments spent in Door County.
Door County offers abundant experiences, and Orchard Country Winery is a highlight worth the visit. Whether you're a wine aficionado or simply looking to enjoy some regional flavors, this winery provides a delightful escape into the heart of Wisconsin’s wine country.
