After countless visits to Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket over the years, I decided to explore Khon Kaen in northeastern Thailand?"my first journey into the heart of Isaan.
A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Khon Kaen offers a perfect mix of the old and new. You can savor KFC and pizza or enjoy noodles and rice from street vendors. Whether you're shopping for software and DVDs at the mall or browsing the bustling open markets, the city caters to every taste. Accommodation options range from charming guest houses to intermediate hotels and even a luxurious 5-star resort.
Nightlife and Dining
While Khon Kaen’s nightlife doesn't rival Pattaya or Bangkok, there are lively spots to explore. A few expat bars are nestled near the Sofitel Hotel, and Thai clubs are spread throughout the city.
Getting around is straightforward, thanks to color-coded Baht Buses?"pick-up trucks with seats in the back. A ride costs about 25 cents, and detailed route maps are available, making navigation a breeze.
For food enthusiasts, the city boasts an abundance of Thai restaurants, particularly around Lake Bueng Kaen Nakhon. Enjoy excellent Thai and Western dishes at reasonable prices. A typical meal, including three or four dishes and a couple of Singha beers, costs around $12. Enjoy delicious meals in open-air restaurants with stunning views of the lake or river, adding a relaxing touch to your evenings.
Exploring Temples and Culture
I spent my days indulging in shopping and sightseeing, particularly visiting some of Asia's most stunning temples. A highlight was Wat Nong Wang Muang, a nine-story masterpiece in the city's heart, featuring mini-museums on each floor with ancient Thai artifacts. I was fortunate to receive a blessing from a Buddhist monk during a music class.
A short trip from the city brought me to a remarkable temple with a pure white Buddha, Pu Don Fai, atop a hill. Although climbing the thousand steps was challenging, the view made it worthwhile.
Leisure Activities
One relaxing day was spent fishing at a nearby lake. For just 200 Baht (about $6), I enjoyed bait, tackle, and a comfy chair. Though I didn’t catch any fish, I relished the calming atmosphere and the adjacent restaurant serving tasty food and cold beer.
Another memorable experience was visiting King Cobra Village to watch an exhilarating snake show. With no admission fee, I enjoyed a 30-minute performance and willingly contributed 100 Baht afterward.
A Memorable Vacation
In all, my 3½-week vacation in Khon Kaen was incredibly relaxing, and I eagerly anticipate returning next year.
