Four years ago, my partner, Mark, and I stumbled upon the charming village of Finesville in southern Warren County by accident. While searching for a country home, our journey took us along the Musconetcong River, leading us to this quaint collection of 18th and 19th-century stone and clapboard buildings. Despite its proximity to metropolitan areas, Warren County was barely on our radar.
Initially a vibrant village in the mid-18th century, Finesville has experienced a resurgence. Locals have restored many of its historic structures, and the community now boasts two vineyards, a winery, an antique store, and an alpaca farm.
A Dream Come True
We were captivated by Finesville and found our dream house?"a circa 1825 stone Georgian colonial?"at an irresistible price of $135,000. Despite its exterior needing work, the interior was stunning, featuring a walk-in fireplace, beamed ceilings, and wide plank floors. We restored it and even received the Warren County Historic Preservation Award for our efforts. We loved it so much that we decided to move there permanently from Morristown.
Exploring Warren County
Warren County is rich with picturesque villages and towns. Victorian Belvidere, the county seat, is a hidden gem known for its 19th-century architecture and lively Victorian Days festival. Its location along the Delaware and Pequest Rivers makes it perfect for outdoor adventures.
In northern Warren County, the town of Hope, founded by Moravians in the 18th century, presents a charming scene with restored stone homes and a former gristmill now serving as an inn. This area rivals the beauty of New England, with a slow pace that enhances its appeal.
Nearby Blairstown, considered for the National Register of Historic Places, is a delightful village with specialty shops and restaurants. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area offers hiking on the Appalachian Trail and a glimpse into 19th-century life at Millbrook Village.
On the county's eastern edge, Hackettstown retains its 19th-century feel, enriched by its colorful Victorian homes and Centenary College.
Revitalizing Phillipsburg
Phillipsburg, Warren County’s largest town, is experiencing a transformation. Once a key industrial city, it now capitalizes on its historic charm. Plans are underway to redevelop Phillipsburg’s waterfront and create a vibrant residential area. While funding for a New Jersey Transportation and Heritage Museum is stalled, the town remains committed to establishing its own cultural center.
A Bright Future
Just across the river, Easton, Pennsylvania, provides additional attractions like the Crayola Factory Museum and the State Theater. Exciting new developments, including luxury condos, are bringing more people closer to downtown Phillipsburg.
Despite its past challenges, Phillipsburg has remarkable potential. Historic properties, such as an 1887 firehouse and a Georgian-style colonial, were recently acquired as investments, showcasing the town’s affordability and charm.
As Phillipsburg evolves, we’re considering moving there to enjoy the growing community, while keeping our beloved Finesville house as a country retreat. Warren County’s undiscovered beauty and rich history offer a compelling alternative for those seeking an authentic slice of the New York Metro area.
