Traveller's Journal: Snowdonia National Park - Day 3
Facing Fear on the Snowdon Mountain Railway
I’ve never clearly remembered when my fear of heights began, though a tumble from a bunk bed during a childhood holiday likely contributed. Yet, despite this phobia, my trip to Llanberis couldn’t be complete without experiencing the famed Snowdon Mountain Railway. I dreaded the inevitable question: “Did you ride the mountain train?”
“Er, no,” I’d stammer, imagining the knowing smiles and quiet laughs. Heights don’t bother me if they’re gradual, but the sheer drops on the postcards looked daunting.
Approaching the ticket booth filled me with a mix of excitement and anxiety. The railway is popular, with limited internet bookings, especially in peak season. Only one carriage travels each route, pushed by either a classic steam engine or a modern diesel. The nostalgic steam smells can be overwhelming, but the sounds of bells and whistles never lose their charm.
Ice at Mount Snowdon’s summit reduced the return fare from £20 to £14, as the train would stop three-quarters up. With ticket in hand, I waited nervously for departure.
We began with a gentle climb from the station before tackling Snowdon in earnest. The train moved slowly, barely outpacing the hardy hikers on our left, who waved as they climbed on foot. At the three-quarter mark, my fears were realized.
Suddenly, the ground vanished beneath the left window, revealing a breathtaking 2,000-foot drop to the Llanberis Pass below. Cars were tiny, like toys on the winding road, reminiscent of looking down from an airplane.
Afterwards, we disembarked to take in the magnificent views for half an hour. The change in temperature was striking; it was nearly t-shirt weather at the base, but up here, thermals were necessary. Despite my initial trepidation, this journey offered an unforgettable adventure into Snowdonia’s majestic heights.
