Silver Argentina
Overview
Argentina, located in the southern part of South America, is bordered by the majestic Andes Mountains to the west and the vast southern Atlantic Ocean to the east and south. To the north, it neighbors Brazil, while Uruguay lies to the northeast. Argentina also maintains control over the Falkland Islands, situated south of Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Officially named República Argentina, it uses Nación Argentina (Argentine Nation) for legislative purposes.
Historical Background
The name "Argentina" is derived from the Latin word for silver, "argentum." This connection traces back to early Spanish expeditions to the River Plate region. Survivors of a shipwrecked voyage led by Juan Díaz de Solís encountered indigenous people in what is now Argentina, receiving silver objects from them as gifts. By 1524, tales of the magnificent Sierra del Plata, a silver-rich mountain, reached Spain. Consequently, the Spanish renamed the river discovered by Solís as Río de la Plata, meaning "The River of Silver."
