Siberia, Russia, Part 9: Chita
Journey to Chita: A Siberian Adventure
After deciding to spend a year teaching at Chita State Technical University, I embarked on a travel adventure like no other. This entry captures the final leg of my seven-day journey to Siberia.
The Siberian Journey by Train
To prepare for my trip, I did my homework?"reading books, watching films, and learning about Siberia's tundra, forests, and permafrost. I was eager to witness it all during the three-day journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. However, reality had other plans.
Contrary to my expectations, the untamed wilds of Siberia were further north than our train route. Our journey lacked the dramatic landscapes I'd imagined?"no vast forests, towering mountains, or breathtaking vistas. Instead, it felt like a slow ride through an endless expanse, reminiscent of Kansas.
Nearing the End
As I settled in on the sixth night, I began to doubt I'd ever reach Chita. It felt like I was trapped in a surreal reality show about travelers losing their sanity over endless delays. But as always, reality surprised me.
Arrival on the Seventh Day
The sound of a broom scratching the floor stirred me from sleep, wielded by the Russian woman overseeing our car. She spoke loudly, gesturing energetically. With the train slowing down and the view obscured by trees and sunlight, I struggled to understand her. After some effort and a playful nudge to wake my companion, Grae, I deciphered the word: "Chita."
We had finally arrived. After three flights, an encounter with a grumpy customs officer, several awkward moments, countless crackers, and seven full days of travel, we were there?"at 5:30 in the morning.
Bursting from our bunks, we hurriedly packed our belongings and stumbled into the hallway, realizing just how much we needed showers.
And then, we stepped off the train into Chita, Siberia, Russia.
