Siberia, Russia Part 2: Where Are We and What Day Is It?
Summary:
As I stood in San Diego’s airport, I pondered the journey ahead to reach Chita, Siberia. With a vodka hangover, three flights, a train ride, and crossing the international date line, it seemed like it would take about two days. Not too bad for traveling to the other side of the world.

The Journey Begins:
At the airport in San Diego, I was already feeling the effects of a vodka hangover. The trip to Chita, Siberia, involved three flights, one train ride, and crossing the international date line. It seemed like a manageable two-day journey to the other side of the world. I quickly realized I should have brushed up on my math skills.
The Itinerary:
1. Fly from San Diego to Seattle.
2. Meet the charity representative and another professor.
3. Fly from Seattle to Anchorage.
4. Fly from Anchorage to Khabarovsk, Russia.
5. Take a train from Khabarovsk to Chita.
How hard could it be? Turns out, very challenging.
Day 1:
The flight to Seattle was smooth. I met Tom Dickinson, founder of Siberian Intercultural Bridges, but the other teacher was missing. Since our flight to Anchorage wasn’t until the next morning, it wasn’t an immediate issue. By midnight, we’d practically given up on him.
Day 2:
At 8 a.m., Grea Waters from Kentucky emerged from the Seattle mist. Our second professor had arrived, and he spoke fluent Russian. This was a huge relief, as my Russian skills were non-existent. The night before, I’d panicked about navigating Khabarovsk and the train system, given the complexities of the Cyrillic alphabet. Tom Dickinson’s constant smiling didn’t ease my anxiety.
Our flight from Seattle to Anchorage was uneventful on Alaska Airlines. While waiting for our next flight, I was preoccupied with thoughts about Aeroflot’s reputation for crashes and wondered how a man from Kentucky could speak fluent Russian. After some investigation, I was concerned to learn he’d never actually been to Russia.
Turning back wasn’t an option, despite my attempts. But that’s a tale for Part 3 of this nomadic adventure series.
