Discovering the Hidden Gems of Cyprus
Unveiling Secret Cyprus
When envisioning Cyprus, most people picture sun-soaked beaches, vibrant cocktail bars, and bustling coastal resorts. While these attractions are undeniably charming, there is so much more to explore when you venture away from the familiar coastline. Welcome to the hidden side of Cyprus, where authenticity and tradition await.
Embracing the Mediterranean Lifestyle
After numerous visits to Cyprus, I fell in love with its people and the Mediterranean way of life. I decided to dive deeper and uncover the island’s true essence on my next Paphos holiday.
Upon arriving in mid-March, I was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming warmth compared to the chilly atmosphere of England. The vibrant fields and lush banana plantations offered a tranquil escape from city life.
Exploring Village Life
Determined to experience the heart of Cyprus, I chose to explore the villages of Kathikas, Anarita, Tsada, and Episkopi. Each village boasts a traditional square, promising an authentic glimpse into Cypriot life.
Staying away from the coast provided a refreshing contrast. Gone were the karaoke bars and souvenir shops, replaced by the simple pleasures of village life. In places like Episkopi and Kathikas, the charm of daily routines continued, seemingly untouched by the tourist hubs just 15-20 minutes away. Locals welcomed visitors, offering homemade goods like fruits, vegetables, and the famous sweet Cyprus wine, Commandaria.
Choosing the Perfect Stay
I opted to stay in Kathikas Village, selecting from a variety of villas to rent in Paphos. Just a short drive from Coral Bay and the picturesque fishing port of Latchi, Kathikas was an ideal base. A car rental allowed me to explore these villages, each with its unique allure and sense of community.
In Kathikas, I discovered the small, family-run Sterna Winery, where I enjoyed wine tastings while learning about the storied history of its cellars.
The Allure of Village Life
Episkopi’s entrance is marked by a dramatic rock face showcasing the rich colors of Cyprus soil. The village, with its narrow and steep roads, remains largely unchanged. Here, I was captivated by the sight of donkeys transporting oranges from the fields, surrounded by groves of citrus and almond trees.
Anarita and Tsada are conveniently located just 5-10 minutes from beaches and golf clubs, catering to those who crave sand or the challenge of a new course. These villages exude charm, and local tavernas eagerly welcome guests to sample a traditional Cyprus Meze or other local specialties.
Experience Real Cyprus
Each village boasts a strong sense of community. It’s heartwarming to see older gentlemen gathering at coffee shops, enjoying games of cards or backgammon, and sharing stories or laughter.
Often, we seek familiarity while abroad, sticking to what we know. But stepping out of comfort zones can lead to extraordinary discoveries. Embrace the challenge and uncover the hidden side of Cyprus. Experience authentic Cypriot living in its villages and gain a deeper appreciation for this enchanting island.
