Discovering Tinda: A Unique Russian Experience
Summary
During my year in Siberia, I was invited to speak at a human rights conference. En route, we made a memorable stop in Tinda?"a city that could only exist in Russia.Exploring Siberia by Train
In Siberia, travel options are limited to cars, helicopters, or the iconic Trans-Siberian Railway. With no car or helicopter at my disposal, the train was my mode of transport. The journey began at 4 AM, after a night spent navigating the complexities of acquiring a travel visa.
My travel companion, Oleg Vladimirovich, and I managed to catch the train, accompanied by Nina, a local reporter. Although the Trans-Siberian Railway offers breathtaking views, at such an early hour, I preferred sleep over scenery.
Russia's vastness is incomprehensible until experienced firsthand. Despite traveling within the same oblast (state), our journey lasted a full 30 hours. Winter landscapes rolled past outside?"snow-covered trees in every direction. While it sounds romantic, the novelty wears off after a full day. Thankfully, the train's radio played John Lee Hooker for much of the trip?"not sure why, but it was a pleasant surprise.
Unveiling Tinda
Tinda is a city like no other. During Stalin's era, it was decided that the timber and resources in this remote part of Siberia were too valuable to ignore, despite being over 500 miles from civilization. The solution? Build a city from the ground up.
Constructing Tinda in Siberia posed incredible challenges. The Russians laid the BUM railway over permafrost, bogs, mountains, and rivers?"not to mention the infamous summer insects. Begun in 1930, the railway reached completion in 1984. Meanwhile, hundreds of concrete buildings rose to create the city.
A hundred thousand people were relocated to Tinda, creating a labor force to exploit the region's resources. Yet, with the fall of communism, the government lost interest. The city is now in decline, with residents leaving in search of better opportunities.
A Reflection on Consequences
The story of Tinda is a testament to the impact of communism, where state interests prevailed over individual needs. Today, those left behind face challenging conditions. Tinda's history serves as a powerful reminder of a time when entire cities were built and abandoned based on political motivations.
In Russia, places like Tinda offer a unique glimpse into a complex history and the enduring spirit of its people.
