In 1999, I moved to Chita, a city in Siberia, Russia, to teach for a year. After enduring seven days of planes and trains, I was finally ready to explore Chita in its entirety.
Day 1: Lenin's Revenge
Spending over three days on a train does peculiar things to your balance. You develop an awkward sway that doesn’t immediately resolve when you step onto solid ground. As I got off the train, my steps were unsteady, like someone who’d indulged in too much Russian vodka. Plus, I hadn’t had a proper shower in three days. Things quickly escalated.
Awaiting Grae, a fellow American, and me were our hosts, Natasha, Oleg, Dima, and a few others, all impeccably dressed. In hindsight, they deserve credit. Despite our bedraggled appearance and less-than-fresh scent, they greeted us warmly without flinching.
As a San Diego native, I often warned friends about Montezuma's Revenge if they drank local water when visiting Mexico. It's not that the water is bad?"just different. You’d think I’d heed my advice. [Let's not mention it.] By the afternoon, I was grappling with Lenin's Revenge. My hosts noticed my discomfort and graciously left me to rest. If only I knew the Russian word for Pepto!
Once again, I’d managed to make a less-than-ideal first impression. But hey, I was only going to be in Chita for a year.
