Lake Como, Italy - A Magical Retreat
Discovering Lake Como's Allure
Just 25 miles north of Milan, Lake Como stands out as one of Italy's most scenic locations. Surrounded by charming towns and magnificent century-old villas, the lake invites you to unwind and enjoy its serene beauty. As the third-largest lake in Italy, Lake Como exudes a tranquil, magical atmosphere with its lush Mediterranean gardens and breathtaking views, making it a sought-after romantic getaway.
Staying at the Elegant Hotel Bellevue
Traveling with my husband, son, and daughter-in-law, we were thrilled to arrive at our chosen retreat, Hotel Bellevue. This 1820-built hotel neighbors the stately Villa Carlotta and sits just steps from the lake. The hotel boasts charming gardens, antique furnishings, and an outdoor pool. Its grand lobby, adorned with a majestic Venetian chandelier and sweeping staircase, is a historical treasure. Our rooms were equally enchanting, filled with antique furniture and soft Italian linens.
Dining with a View
After unpacking, we ventured out to explore and soon found The Victorian Tea Garden, a charming restaurant perched on Lake Como's banks. Dining under a grapevine-covered pergola, we were mesmerized by the sweeping views of the Swiss Alps and the deep blue waters of the lake. Our host, a delightful elderly gentleman, made us feel truly welcome. Sipping champagne, we savored the setting's magic for hours.
Exploring Bellagio
As the sun set, we returned to Hotel Bellevue for a delightful dinner before heading to Bellagio. This picturesque village, with its narrow cobblestone streets, is a treasure trove of shops, restaurants, and churches. Don't miss the chance to shop here, especially for exquisite silk scarves, ties, and leather goods.
Bellagio is largely pedestrian-friendly, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll. The village exudes old-world charm, and its well-tended gardens are a testament to the residents' love of their home.
Endless Adventures at Lake Como
Lake Como offers countless activities for visitors. The serene landscapes are perfect for relaxation, while adventurous souls can enjoy swimming, water-skiing, sailing, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Day trips into the mountains offer breathtaking vistas.
Boat excursions from the lake are essential. Ferries can take you to historic monuments, splendid villas, and lakeside towns like Varenna. You might also explore neighboring Switzerland, where the town of Lugano offers fantastic, though pricey, shopping.
Cultural and Culinary Delights
If you're interested in art and history, visit the celebrated Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, famed for its gardens and antique-filled villa. The Duomo, or "Renaissance Cathedral," in Como's town center, is another must-see.
Lakeside towns present shopping and culinary adventures. Sample regional specialties such as olive oil, wine, and cheese in the area's shops, cafes, and restaurants.
As evening falls, enjoy a glass of wine at a local bar before dining on regional or modern cuisine at one of the many delightful restaurants. For entertainment, dance the night away in local discos or, like my family and I, take a peaceful evening walk along the lake.
The Timeless Charm of Lake Como
Lake Como is unparalleled in its beauty and charm. With its stunning views, tranquil surroundings, exquisite architecture, and warm, hospitable locals, it offers a unique escape that is both elegant and breathtaking. It's a destination that will repeatedly draw you back, leaving you dreaming of its shores long after you've left.
