Dining Delights in Paris: Third Stop at Le Gourmet
Summary
Discover the charm and culinary excellence of Le Gourmet in Paris, where classic French dishes are served at prices reminiscent of 15 years ago.
Article
Our journey exploring Parisian cuisine brings us to Le Gourmet, a hidden gem offering delightful French food at unbelievable prices, reminiscent of Paris from a decade and a half ago.
Lunchtime Decision
This article is the third in a series dedicated to exceptional dining experiences in Paris. My passion for quality food drives me to guide fellow travelers to eateries they’ll love.
In Paris, lunchtime is synonymous with restaurant time. Workers in the city typically don’t bring lunch from home or rely on corporate catering. Small restaurants play a vital role, serving locals quickly, affordably, and deliciously.
The same applies to travelers. After a morning wandering the charming streets of Montmartre, hunger leads you to Place de Clichy, a bustling area between the 17th, 9th, and 18th districts (metro station: Place de Clichy). It's time for a gourmet experience!
Le Gourmet
If you’re like me, you want your money’s worth when dining out. The eateries around Place de Clichy, however, often fall short?"either overpriced or underwhelming. Enter Le Gourmet, just a short walk away.
At Place de Clichy, face downhill with the metro station behind you. Head to Rue de Clichy, just left of Rue d’Amsterdam. Walk about 200 yards, turn left onto Rue de Bruxelles, and another 200 yards brings you to No. 19?"the unmistakable French bistro-style facade of Le Gourmet.
Entering the Bistro
Arrive around noon to snag a table before the rush. This charming spot is always bustling by 12:30 PM. Its vintage decor?"dark wood panels, old posters, chalkboard menus, a traditional bar, mosaic floors, and bistro-style furniture?"captivates as you enter.
Since taking over from the previous long-time owners, the current chef preserved the timeless ambiance, only updating the facade in 2006. Guests are greeted warmly and seated promptly, ensuring a swift service ideal for lunch hour.
Menu Offerings
The daily-changing menu is displayed on chalkboards, a rarity in Paris where menus often remain static. Not so at Le Gourmet, where you’ll experience true diversity. Eat there for 20 days, and you could try 20 different dishes.
Gourmet Cuisine Mission
The chef hails from Touraine in Western France and finds inspiration in Burgundy and Lyons cuisine. Dishes like veal knuckle (souris de veau), roasted gilthead bream (daurade royale rôtie), and stewed duck (pot-au-feu de canard) showcase traditional flavors.
To ensure freshness, the chef visits the Rungis market daily at 3:30 AM, sourcing only what’s necessary for the day. His philosophy?"fresh ingredients, authentic preparation?"means no frozen items or artificial sauces. Even the sauces are made in-house. Spices are used sparingly, allowing natural flavors to shine.
Appetizers, Mains, Desserts, and Wines
Le Gourmet typically offers four appetizers, three or four main courses, and four desserts. You might find warmed goat cheese on country bread or float through flavors with baba au rhum or fondant cake.
The wine list features light wines, with bottles sourced from the chef’s hometown of Valençay. Expect a thoughtful selection including Gamay, Cabernet, Valençay, Bourgueil, and Saumur-Champigny.
Incredible Value
Exceptional food at Le Gourmet won’t break the bank. A complete meal can be enjoyed for just €13 (around $16), with a small additional cost for wine.
Few places in Paris offer such quality for this price. Le Gourmet earns my wholehearted recommendation.
