Eating Well in Paris: A Visit to Chez Tante Alice
Summary:
In the second installment of my series on eating well in Paris, I introduce you to Chez Tante Alice?"a gem of French provincial cuisine.Discovering Chez Tante Alice
After a delightful experience at Chez Georges, I wondered what could match that culinary adventure. The answer came from my friends, Angelo and Vinni, who invited me to Tante Alice.
First Impressions
Tante Alice, located in the charming southern 10th district, just ten minutes from Place de la République, is a modern yet inviting spot. The classic burgundy sign and surrounding chic boutiques set a pleasant scene. Entering, you’re greeted by a tasteful decor reminiscent of a Normandy inn, complete with Vichy-style tablecloths. The intimate layout allows for private conversations.
We were warmly welcomed by one of the two owners and quickly seated. With an upstairs area used during busy lunch hours, the main floor was almost full but pleasantly quiet.
The Menu and Ordering
Our hostess presented the menu and suggested starting with an aperitif. I chose a Kir Royal while my friend opted for their signature mint cocktail. The menu features 5 to 7 classic French provincial dishes per section, staying true to the countryside’s culinary traditions. I began with pan-seared ceps and followed with a rich duck liver steak.
Consulting with the chef, we chose a half-bottle of Chinon, despite her honest suggestion of a more affordable alternative?"a refreshing approach in a business often focused on profits.
A Culinary Journey
Tante Alice operates at a relaxed pace, allowing you to savor the experience. The ceps arrived when I started to feel hungry, their earthy aroma tantalizing my senses. Generously portioned and perfectly seared, they set a high standard, complemented by our fruity red wine.
Soon after, we enjoyed our main courses. The duck liver steak, masterfully prepared with a delicate raspberry reduction, melted in the mouth. It was paired perfectly with the Chinon, although a white wine like Gewürztraminer or Sauternes could also be delightful.
Sweet Endings
To finish, I indulged in vanilla and coffee ice cream, the flavors as rich and authentic as promised. A double espresso concluded the meal.
Worth Every Penny
The bill was about €35 per person, including wine. The reasonable price, combined with impeccable service and fresh ingredients, made for an unforgettable evening.
Chez Tante Alice is a place I wholeheartedly recommend.
