On my first visit to Denmark, I found myself deeply enchanted by Copenhagen. Surprisingly, despite what my guidebook suggested, I encountered elephants and even enjoyed ice hockey in the heat of summer.

Upon arriving in Copenhagen, I was exhausted from backpacking and eager for a rest. Traveling with three fellow Americans, our hopes waned as each hostel declared they were fully booked. While seeking advice at a local bar, a kind Dane offered us a ride to a hotel where we were guaranteed a room.
Imagine my bewilderment when we arrived at the local professional ice hockey rink! To earn extra cash during the summer, the rink melted its ice and set up beds. Our beds were located right around the left face-off dot, creating a scene reminiscent of an office filled with beds instead of desks. It was an affordable, dry option with a lively, communal atmosphere. If you've seen the movie Slap Shot, it was like residing among a few hundred Hanson Brothers.

Each tusk offered a different beer, though I sampled them a little too enthusiastically to remember the brands. Sadly, there was no aspirin elephant for my morning headache.
