During my first visit to Copenhagen, I fell in love with both the city and Denmark itself. Contrary to what my guidebook hinted, I discovered you could encounter elephants and experience ice hockey even in the middle of summer.

Upon arriving in Copenhagen, exhausted from backpacking, all I wanted was a nap. Traveling with three other Americans, we grew increasingly anxious as hostel after hostel was fully booked. Our breakthrough came at a local bar, where a friendly Dane offered to drive us to a place with available space.

Befriended by some local Danes, we were mystically invited to see "real Danish elephants." We were intrigued. They assured us we could touch them, and even ride them. What a story for my travel journal!
That evening, from the ice rink, we were driven into the city center, stopping at what appeared to be a quaint tavern. Here, they said, were the elephants. Inside stood a life-sized wooden elephant, doubling as an ingenious beer dispenser. Press your glass to its trunk and pull a tusk to pour your chosen brew. Each tusk served a different beer, though I can't quite recall the brands, thanks to my enthusiastic "research." Unfortunately, there was no aspirin elephant available the following morning.
