Congratulations, Valencia, Spain!
Valencia's Rise to Global Prominence
For years, Valencia, Spain, has strived to be acknowledged as the country's third most significant city, following Madrid and Barcelona. Known for its vibrant Valencia Fallas Festival, the city is now gaining global recognition, thanks to its selection as the host of the America's Cup and the unveiling of the latest addition to its stunning City of the Arts and Sciences.
Setting Sail with Valencia, Spain
On November 26, 2003, Valencia was officially announced as the host city for the America's Cup 2007. The Swiss team, Alinghi, the 2003 America's Cup winner, chose Valencia as their base, given Switzerland's lack of a coastline. Valencia emerged as a prime candidate due to its excellent weather, long coastline, and top-notch facilities in neighboring areas like Denia, Javea, and Alicante. The America's Cup Management (ACM) released the Terms of Challenge on January 23, 2003, and opened registration on January 27, 2003.
For the first time in 152 years, the competition will span four years, featuring various races called "Acts," culminating in the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2007. This new format introduces a blend of fleet racing and match-racing, promising an exhilarating spectacle.
From Marseilles to Valencia
Act One of the America's Cup began on September 5, 2004, in Marseilles, where large TV screens were set up to engage the public. Marseilles was selected for its vantage points, allowing spectators to experience the event closely. Only five teams participated in Act One, including defenders Alinghi and challengers BMW Oracle Racing, Le Defi from France, K-Challenge, and South Africa's Shosoloza. Acts Two and Three took place in Valencia, enabling teams to acclimate to local conditions. The 2004 champion emerged by accumulating points from these acts.
By the close of registration on April 29, 2005, eleven challenging teams had signed up, including BMW Oracle from the USA, Italy's +39 Challenge, Mascalzone Latino Capitalia Team, and Luna Rossa, as well as teams from South Africa, New Zealand, France, Sweden, Germany, China, and Spain's Desafio Espanol. With nine Louis Vuitton Acts completed, teams will regroup before three new Acts begin in May 2006.
Valencia: A Vibrant Destination
Thanks to its innovative attractions and the upcoming America's Cup, Valencia's airport is bustling, with plans for flight expansions to ease travel. Premier hotels such as the Silken Puerta Valencia near the port and Posadas de EspaƱa in the industrial area offer delightful accommodations, ensuring a memorable stay in this lively city.
