Colonial Williamsburg's Revolutionary City
Experience History in Person
In Colonial Williamsburg's Revolutionary City, history comes alive with an immersive experience that challenges visitors to consider their stance on freedom. This isn’t virtual reality; it's face-to-face interaction that connects you to pivotal moments of the American Revolution. Just like those who supported George Washington or celebrated Patrick Henry, you’ll be invited to take a stand. It feels real because it is.
A Personal Encounter with History
Women visitors may find themselves faced with historical challenges, reminiscent of the discrimination endured by their 18th-century counterparts. Questions like, "Has your husband approved your participation?" serve as stark reminders of past inequalities. These encounters highlight the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for the liberties we enjoy today.
Rex Ellis, vice president of Colonial Williamsburg Foundation's Historic Area, hopes the experience prompts reflection on the privileges of citizenship and democracy.
Unveiling The Revolutionary City
Opening on March 20, Revolutionary City is set to redefine living history with daily events from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each session unfolds in an open-air streetscape at Williamsburg's eastern end, vividly portraying the era between 1774-1781.
This two-day event focuses on two key themes: "The Collapse of Royal Government" and "Citizens at War." Through expert actor-interpreters, you’ll witness the stories of everyday heroes who played crucial roles in shaping the nation.
A Dynamic Historical Experience
The program brings history to life with spontaneous, historically accurate events. Guests can engage in various activities and shape their own historical roles. This dynamic approach keeps the experience fresh and engaging, allowing you to connect with the past in a personal way.
Ellis notes that many challenges faced by Colonial Americans, such as familial conflicts and political debates, resonate with issues today.
Freedom to Explore
Participation in the Revolutionary activities is optional. Visitors with a general admission ticket can freely enter and exit the program area. Meanwhile, Colonial Williamsburg's adjacent Historic Area remains open, offering esteemed attractions, exhibits, and experiences.
Don’t miss the chance to meet the diverse men and women?"rich and poor, free and enslaved?"who populate Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City.
