Christmas Island
Discover the Unique Jewel of the Indian Ocean
Believe it or not, Christmas Island has no connection to the holiday season. As a small, non-self-governing territory of Australia, it is situated in the Indian Ocean approximately 2,360 km northwest of Perth. Home to only about 1,500 residents, Christmas Island captivates scientists and naturalists with its unique natural landscape and distinct species that have evolved in isolation, largely undisturbed by human interference.
Although there has been some mining activity over the years, over 60 percent of the island’s 135 square kilometers is a designated national park. This protected expanse includes vast areas of pristine and ancient rainforest, making it a haven for biodiversity.
The origins of Christmas Island’s discovery remain unclear. It first appeared on a map by Pieter Goos in 1666, labeled as Moni. The earliest recorded visit was by William Dampier in March 1688. He found the island uninhabited while traveling from New Holland to Cocos. After being pulled off course, Dampier arrived at Christmas Island after a 28-day journey.
