Attention America: Here Come the Thunderbirds!
Summary:
After weeks of rigorous spring training, the new US Air Force Thunderbird Team was ready for its approval show at Nellis AFB. High-ranking officers, along with about 1,000 friends and family members, got an exclusive preview of the upcoming air show season. And what a season it promises to be!---
Article:
I recently received an invitation from my daughter to visit her and her family in Las Vegas and watch her husband at work. Las Vegas? Who could resist that? But this visit was special for another reason!
My son-in-law, Steve, is also known as "Dallas." Major Steve Horton is the
4 slot pilot for the United States Air Force Flight Demonstration Team?"The Thunderbirds.
The occasion was the Approval Show?"the first performance of the season, exclusively for the team's friends, family, and a few high-ranking generals taking careful notes. Approximately 1,000 people enjoyed the spectacle at Nellis AFB under overcast skies. The audience size was intimate compared to a typical show, which can draw up to 200,000. The largest ever was at Coney Island on July 4, 1987, with a whopping 2.25 million viewers.
The following night featured the annual kick-off dinner, celebrating the end of a challenging training period. This year's event was held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in vibrant Las Vegas.
I had the chance to meet some of the new team members, including LTC Kevin Robbins, the Commander/Leader; MAJ Ed Casey, the Opposing Solo; CPT Nichole Malachowski, Right Wing AKA "FiFi"; and CPT Tad Clark, the Narrator. FiFi is notably the first female pilot on the Thunderbird team?"a tribute to her exceptional abilities?"and was featured on Good Morning America that morning.
This elite group consists of six pilots, six other officers, and a support team of 135 outstanding men and women. Their talent, energy, dedication, and teamwork make them the best in the world. I felt truly humbled and incredibly proud to be in their presence.
The Thunderbirds' mission is primarily to support recruitment and retention programs, as well as public relations. They spend as much time in meet-and-greets as they do flying, serving as an impressive PR machine.
The team has a demanding schedule from March to November each year, with 65-75 shows across more than 30 states. For more information and to find a show near you, visit [www.nellis.af.mil](http://www.nellis.af.mil). It’s an experience you won’t forget?"it's purely AWESOME!
