The Importance of Reverence and Moderation in Our Diet
My Relationship with Food
I approach food with deep respect and gratitude. This mindset guides my choices, emphasizing moderation in what I consume.
Here are two personal stories that highlight the importance of reverence and moderation when it comes to food.
A Discovery with a Message
Recently, while at work, I noticed a small, discarded picture frame near the dumpster. Curiosity got the better of me, so I picked it up.
To my surprise, the frame contained a powerful statement: "The Human Body Is Not A Garbage Can," stitched in pink needlepoint.
I took it home, cleaned it, and now it hangs proudly in my office. It serves as a daily reminder of the importance of respecting our bodies.
A Tragic Lesson
This message came to mind when I read about Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old woman from Sacramento. She tragically died from water intoxication after participating in a contest called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii," organized by radio station KDND-FM.
Contestants drank excessive amounts of water to win a Nintendo Wii, but Jennifer's body couldn’t handle it. Her death was caused by hyponatremia, where the sodium levels in the body become dangerously low.
This contest promoted extreme and harmful behavior, treating the body like a garbage can. Such disregard for moderation had fatal consequences.
A Call for Reverence
It’s a grim reminder of why we must approach what we put in our bodies with respect. I wish those responsible for the contest had found my needlepoint message and reflected on its meaning.
Perhaps then, such a dangerous contest would never have taken place, and Jennifer Strange would still be with us today.
By cherishing and respecting our bodies, we honor the important role food plays in our lives.
