Taking a Stand Against the Gas Price War

Can Everyday People Influence Gas Prices?

Can regular citizens truly impact the soaring gas prices in our nation? The answer is a tentative yes. Humans have an incredible ability to affect change in our world, for better or worse. A single person can make a significant impact and even alter history; it simply requires the decision to take action. However, change becomes even more powerful when it involves a collective effort?"an entire community or nation standing together. To make a real difference, millions must unite, declaring, "We've had enough!" Instead of relying on one person to do all the work, if millions contribute consistently, the government, corporations, or whoever is responsible will eventually notice that citizens are no longer passively accepting the status quo.

A Personal Anecdote and a Possible Solution

Recently, I received an intriguing email. As an environmental advocate, I'd prefer a shift to renewable energy. But until then, I, like everyone else, need to get around. With gas prices reaching $2.75 in my area, even a simple trip to the store strains my budget. It’s impractical to boycott gas entirely, as we all need to venture out for necessities. Building my own solar-powered vehicle isn't feasible, nor is walking ten miles to the grocery store.

The email proposed an idea: Oil companies have been competing since the industrial era, often engaging in price wars to retain customers. This competition can be leveraged to our advantage. The largest suppliers, Exxon and Mobil, have merged, simplifying our task: avoid purchasing from ExxonMobil or any station selling their gas.

Could This Strategy Work?

Oil companies may dismiss this idea, but logically, it holds potential. If ExxonMobil’s sales decline significantly, they might lower prices to attract customers back. As a result, when prices drop and people return to Exxon, other stations may further reduce their prices to regain clientele. Although we may never see $1.50 gas again, even $2.00 would be a welcome relief.

The Power of Collective Action

I grow weary of excuses about high demand and low supply, especially when prices spike right before summer vacations. It's hard to believe oil companies aren't exploiting our desire for travel.

Creating and sustaining a movement like this requires dedication and passion from many people. Who knows? Perhaps we can make history and push for cleaner alternatives, like solar-powered cars, which would truly challenge the current system.

Together, we can spark meaningful change.
