Discovering the Essence of Duty and Detachment
In this chapter of New Age Spirituality, we explore one of the highest teachings of Vedanta. A Sannyasin, a seeker of spiritual wisdom, encounters a Vyadha?"a butcher?"and is astonished by his profound knowledge. The Sannyasin asks, "With such knowledge, why are you in a Vyadha's body, doing such unpleasant work?"
The Vyadha wisely responds, "No duty is impure. I was born into these circumstances and learned this trade in my youth. Despite my work, I remain unattached and strive to perform my duties well. I fulfill my responsibilities as a householder, bringing happiness to my parents. Though I have not pursued Yoga or become a Sannyasin, the spiritual knowledge you see in me comes from performing my duties without attachment."
In India, there lives a sage, a remarkable Yogi, who shares wisdom not through direct teaching but through insightful conversations. He once revealed the secret of work: "Let the end and the means be united." Work should be done as worship, with full devotion and focus. The Vyadha and a woman in the story demonstrate this by performing their duties with joy and dedication, leading them to spiritual illumination. Their journey shows that fulfilling one's duties without attachment to outcomes leads to the soul's highest realization.
The worker attached to results often complains about their tasks. In contrast, an unattached worker sees all duties as noble, tools for overcoming selfishness and achieving soul freedom. We often overestimate ourselves, and our duties reflect our true merit more than we admit. Competition breeds envy and damages kindness, turning life into a series of dissatisfactions. Only by embracing our responsibilities joyfully can we find true enlightenment.
