Article Body

In ancient India, there was a unique custom where princesses selected their husbands according to their preferences. Some sought the most handsome partner, others valued intelligence or wealth. Princes from neighboring regions would dress in their finest and present themselves, often with criers to extol their virtues, hoping to win the princess’s favor.

During these ceremonies, the princess, dressed in sumptuous attire, would be carried on a throne through the assembly. If unimpressed by a suitor, she simply instructed her bearers to "Move on," dismissing him without further thought. However, if she found someone appealing, she would crown him with a garland of flowers, marking him as her chosen companion.

In this tale, the most beautiful princess in the world was holding such a ceremony. Her heart was set on marrying the handsomest man, yet despite numerous gatherings, she remained unsatisfied. This most recent event, the grandest yet, saw more attendees than ever before, but the princess appeared uninterested, disappointing those hoping for a conclusion.

Then entered a striking young man, a Sannyasin, resembling the brilliance of the sun. He stood quietly in a corner, observing. As the princess approached, captivated by his presence, she stopped and placed the garland upon him. To everyone’s astonishment, the Sannyasin rejected it, declaring, "What nonsense is this? I am a Sannyasin. What is marriage to me?"

The king, mistaking his reluctance for poverty, offered him half the kingdom immediately and the rest upon his death. Yet again, the Sannyasin discarded the garland, firmly stating, "Nonsense! I do not want to marry," before leaving the assembly with purpose.
