With Christmas around the corner, we naturally reflect on the birth of Jesus. While many know him as a teacher and healer, the Bible also reveals a deeper identity: God promised King David that a son would reign over Israel forever?"this son is Jesus Christ.
Often overlooked is Jesus’ rightful title as "King of the Jews." When Jesus was born, the wise men asked Herod, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews?" This was no trivial inquiry. The Jewish priests knew from scripture that a special king would indeed be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2,4).
Reflecting on Jesus’ first time on earth, it wasn't God's will for him to become King of Israel just then. The gospel needed to spread worldwide first, which it has. Yet, this doesn’t mean Jesus won't be king over Israel.
The Bible assures us that when Jesus returns, his claim to the throne of David will differ vastly from the earthly kings we know. Jesus will embody the true authority and power needed to claim the throne.
The Bible also offers a beautiful hope for our troubled world. It won’t forever remain in turmoil, tainted by violence and corruption. We are promised a future filled with peace and righteousness.
To share in this hope, we must take action now. Understanding, believing, and being baptized in the name of Christ opens the door to eternal life with Jesus in the world to come.
As the apostle Paul expressed:
"Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:8)
This Christmas, as you ponder the birth of Jesus, also reflect on the purpose of his life and the joy the coming King will bring!
