Hope is defined as the anticipation of something good, a belief that what we desire will come to pass. Are you hoping for a positive outcome in your dreams, health, or finances? Can you envision the result so clearly that it feels almost tangible? But on what is your hope based? Perhaps you were excited yesterday because the stock market rose or the doctor gave a hopeful prognosis. But what about today, when the market fell and your health took a turn for the worse?Faith is described as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). What does this mean? Even when everything seems set for disaster, we are called to hope against all odds. But does simply gritting your teeth and hoping for the best really change things?
Let’s see how the Bible addresses this. In Romans, it teaches us to rejoice even in tribulation. Why? Because hardships are tests that strengthen us. The more you learn to rely on hope and patiently wait in faith, the more your patience develops. This patience leads to small breakthroughs, giving you experiences that become part of you. These experiences build confidence for greater challenges ahead.
This whole process shapes your character. It transforms you into someone new. Whether you've been hurt, sick, depressed, or beaten down, you will emerge with wisdom, peace, and strength you never knew you had. You’ll also have a clearer understanding of who you are, enabling you to help others through their struggles.
Hope does not disappoint because God's love is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. Do you know the love of God? Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith, endured the cross for the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2). He is Emmanuel, meaning "God with us." Though he was divine, he became human and experienced challenges like us. Yet, he endured and now sits at the right hand of the Father, having prepared a place for you. With Jesus as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit resides in you. You are not alone. Within you is an incredible power to persevere!
