From Atheist to Agnostic to Believer: A Personal Journey
I've always been an avid reader. From a young age, I was fascinated by books about religion and mythology. By the time I turned seven, I had already read both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, explored numerous texts on Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, and delved into various ancient mythologies. Being so young, I saw the world in black and white. I dismissed all religious notions as myths, concluding there could be no God. How could the earth have formed in six days? How could Noah have fit two of every animal on the Ark? The gods of these stories seemed cruel and unjust, leading me to embrace atheism.
As I grew older, I started to understand that interpretations vary, and not everything should be taken literally. I realized that human writings are subject to different interpretations. This uncertainty led me to adopt agnosticism around the age of twelve. I felt I lacked sufficient knowledge to confirm or deny God's existence. Whether God existed or not seemed irrelevant?"I believed living a good life was what mattered.
Now, I've become a believer. The shift didn’t come from discovering proof, but from a desire for meaning beyond this life of sorrow, suffering, and chaos. I hope for an afterlife, a realm beyond the evils we witness daily.
I believe in a God, but not one of vengeance or punishment. Life is filled with unjust outcomes?"cruel individuals often live happily, while good people suffer. I reject the idea of a God who punishes by turning people into pillars of salt or raining down pestilence.
Nor do I believe in a loving God who intervenes in our lives. A truly caring deity wouldn't allow natural disasters, famine, or atrocities like the Holocaust. The notion of a cosmic battle between God and the devil falls short?"if the devil can wreak such havoc, then God isn’t all-powerful or doesn’t care for us enough.
I envision a God who created us, endowed us with independent thought, and left us to find our path without interference. I believe those who lead good lives, not necessarily perfect ones, will be led to a better existence after death. Those who choose otherwise may find their existence ceases.
Of course, my belief isn't without its challenges. I've never seen or conversed with God, so I can't definitively say what constitutes a good life or if my theory holds. What I do know is that I've lost several loved ones, including my father, sister, and youngest son, all of whom I consider good people. I need to believe they’ve moved on to a better place. Without God, there is no hope?"and without hope, there is nothing.
