How heavy are the burdens you're carrying? Are you overwhelmed by guilt, financial worries, an abusive partner, or the death of a child? Jesus assures us: "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:30)
At first, this might sound like a mere cliché. You might think, "You don't understand my problems!" I get it; I used to picture oxen tied with heavy wooden yokes, dragging machinery. Even a light yoke seemed burdensome. Slaves once bore such yokes, forced into hard labor and kept under control by their masters.
Then, I had an epiphany. My husband, Jack, used to openly voice his concerns. While I silently prayed and felt weighed down, Jack would infuriate me with his grumbling. Yet, after his daily walk with the dog, he returned home cheerful and refreshed. The problems remained, so how could he be so happy? Astonishingly, it took me years to understand.
Jack's favorite scripture is: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13). He embraced this verse, repeated it daily, and on his walks, entrusted his burdens to Jesus. It was so simple! While I believed God would eventually solve everything, I struggled to hand over my troubles and say, "Jesus, here's my burden. Would you please carry it, as you promised?"
Wondering about the outcomes? Jack returned home happy, and indeed, our problems dissipated in time. We learned that God is abundantly faithful and always on time. Often, we clung by a thread until the last moment, but God never failed us. I recall when my husband's business faced a sudden market crash, making it challenging to pivot immediately. One night, as Jack drifted to sleep, he suddenly said, "I see two huge angels on our roof, one on each side!" He had entrusted our situation to God, who then provided a vision of guardian angels. This brought us immense peace and assurance of His protection.
Truly, His yoke isn't a heavy burden. It means that whatever you endure, no matter how difficult, if you surrender it to Him, acknowledging your limitations, you'll find that His grace is sufficient, and His strength shines in your weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9). When you're weak, He is strong. By letting go and letting God, you open the door to miracles and testimonies of His goodness.
Release your heavy burdens. Let Him carry them for you. It's His promise, and He never fails. "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)
