As an Associate Youth Pastor I have been treated as a second class citizen

Feeling Undervalued as an Associate Youth Pastor
Summary
Isn't God wonderful? Often, when we feel let down by others, we turn to Him, who is true and loving. I’ve had the privilege of serving both as a Youth Pastor and a Senior Pastor. I've observed some social slights and subtle dismissals, suggesting a belief that a Senior Pastor's calling is somehow superior to that of a Youth or Associate Pastor.
The Calling
We must first acknowledge that God, in His goodness, calls us into a new life through Jesus Christ. At our church in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, we live by the principle: "All to maturity, some for service." We are all called to be mature followers of Christ, and some are graced to serve as ministers.
As ministers, we are gifts to our local churches. When people ask, "How do you know you’re called?" my response is clear: "If you’re called by God, you’ll feel unsettled until you embrace His purpose for you."
Personal Experiences
During a pastor's fellowship, while I served as a Youth Pastor, an incident stuck with me. A Senior Pastor asked my Senior Pastor for help with arranging chairs, saying, "Hey, grab your man and help me." Though my Pastor didn't think twice, I felt the need to express, "I'm God’s man, not anyone else’s."
Another instance occurred at a pastors’ gathering in a different state. Introducing myself as Pastor Stevens, I was welcomed warmly until I clarified my role as an Associate Pastor. The reception noticeably changed; conversations halted, and eye contact was avoided.
Reflecting on Our Roles
Have you, as a Senior Pastor, ever unintentionally looked down on someone who wasn't in your position? Or, as an Associate, have you felt undervalued? Perhaps you’re a Senior Pastor who remembers feeling this way when you were an Associate.
These experiences remind us to value every role within the church equally and appreciate the diverse callings God places upon us all.
Sincerely,
Pastor John Stevens
