How to Visit a New Mom and Earn Her Appreciation
Planning to visit a new mom and her newborn? As a mom who’s experienced this four times, I’ve had both wonderful and not-so-great visits from friends. Here’s how to make your visit truly supportive and enjoyable for everyone involved.
1) Call Ahead and Offer to Bring Food
New moms, particularly those breastfeeding, are often hungry. Instead of asking if she needs anything, take charge by offering to bring lunch. Ask if she’d prefer Italian or Chinese, and ensure the meal is nutritious rather than filled with empty carbs. Remember, new moms need good nutrition during this time.
2) Skip the Heavy Scents
Newborns have sensitive skin, and strong perfumes can cause irritation. When visiting, avoid wearing heavy fragrances. This isn’t a date?"it's about comfort for the baby and mom.
3) Wash Your Hands
New moms are understandably cautious about germs. Wash your hands upon arrival and ask permission before holding the baby. And definitely leave any sick children at home.
4) Don’t Hog the Baby
The new mom needs time to bond with her baby. Hold the newborn briefly, perhaps while the mom takes a quick break, but always return the baby promptly. Respect her need to connect with her child.
5) Offer Practical Help
Proactively offer to assist with tasks. Suggest watching her older child so she can rest, or offer to do the dishes or laundry. Instead of asking, “Is there anything I can do?” say, “What can I do to help?” Even small gestures, like bringing paper plates, can make a big difference.
6) Keep Your Visit Short
New moms are adjusting to a demanding schedule and need plenty of rest. Keep your visit to around 15 minutes unless you’re particularly close to her. Even then, be mindful of her need for rest.
By following these tips, you’ll be giving the new mom the support she needs and fostering a deeper, appreciative connection. And who knows? She might return the favor when it’s your turn!
