Embracing Life in Challenging Times
Summary:
Facing the inevitability of loss is difficult, but necessary. To honor our loved ones, we must take emotional and financial steps to continue pursuing our dreams. This is ultimately what they want for us.

In April 2003, I lost my husband, David, the love of my life and a devoted father. His passing taught me invaluable lessons about embracing life before and after such unimaginable events.
Though preparing for death isn't instinctive, every family eventually faces loss. To keep living out our hopes and dreams, it's essential to take both emotional and financial steps. Our loved ones would want nothing less for us.
I'm currently partnering with State Farm Life Insurance Companies to share my insights and honor women who have courageously embraced life after losing their spouses.
Here are some key lessons:
- Live Fully: While you're healthy, create a "life plan" with your partner that includes both joint and individual goals, short-term and long-term. This ensures you do everything possible to enjoy life together.
- Build a Support System: After David passed, friends and family became my pillars of strength. Everyone needs different kinds of support, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.
- Honor the Legacy: Engaging in meaningful activities is healing. Through the Coalition to Prevent Deep-Vein Thrombosis, I aim to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.
I'm encouraging couples to engage in "tough conversations" and plan ahead. I wish David and I had taken more time to plan for our future instead of leaving it for later. Discussing difficult topics beforehand is much easier than during a crisis.
Strengthening your family's financial security is crucial. Life insurance for both parents ensures that a family doesn't have to drastically change their lifestyle due to lost income or the absence of a stay-at-home parent.
Regarding organ donation and life-sustaining measures, document your preferences. A living will and power of attorney can ensure your wishes are respected and prevent painful family disputes.
Losing a loved one is never easy, but taking proactive steps now can ease the burden later. This is why I’m collaborating with State Farm to encourage families to embrace life today and prepare for tomorrow.
