Summary:
Caught in a lover's triangle, a seemingly perfect family is torn apart by desire and indecision.Article:
There are over 6 billion people on Earth, all aspiring for world peace. Let's start small?"can we get just two people to coexist peacefully?
Meet Samuel Twain, a 54-year-old Yale graduate and former law professor turned successful philanthropist and land developer. Professionally, he’s unstoppable; personally, he feels cursed. Sam is married to Jane, a stunning and brilliant woman who excels in ballet, tennis, and community activities. From the outside, they appear the perfect couple.
Together, they raised two accomplished daughters. Jacqueline, a 26-year-old physician, is married to Alan, another physician. Gail, a 21-year-old soon-to-be lawyer, is engaged to Richard. This Boca Raton family seems like a modern-day Pleasantville, envied by all. Yet beneath the surface, they’re ensnared in turmoil and grief.
Why? One word: sex. Sigmund Freud famously suggested men think about sex every three seconds. Whether or not that's true, Sam and Jane find themselves in therapy with Dr. Ellen Friedrich, who’s baffled by their inability to reconcile.
The root of their misery dates back eight years when Dawn, a former secretary who divorced two abusive alcoholics, entered Sam’s life. The chemistry between Sam and Dawn is explosive, creating a blazing connection at an age when Sam might have expected otherwise. Yet, Sam remains deeply in love with Jane, despite 30 years cooling their marital passion.
Logic would suggest one of these mature, intelligent adults could end the turmoil. But relationships aren't that simple. Sam can’t leave Jane because he loves her; he can’t leave Dawn because of their profound connection. Dawn relies on Sam for emotional and financial stability, while Jane clings to her husband, fearing the chaos of single life and the horrors of online dating.
This tangled web continues because life is messy, human emotions are complicated, and maybe, just maybe, we’re all addicted to the drama. Perhaps true peace, like the Black Eyed Peas hinted, is elusive, but confronting our addictions might be the first step toward balance.
