Hello everyone,I'm Michael Adam Assenberg. Back in 1985, I was working as a security guard when I encountered a group of people near the TNT shack. As I approached, they fled towards the back of the complex. I pursued them until they attempted to escape over a train bridge, but their vehicle stalled halfway.
Armed with only a nightstick and mace, I confronted them. Suddenly, a third person hit me from behind with a baseball bat, leaving me without feeling from the waist down for six months. It took seven long years before I could walk again.
Decades later, doctors tried every possible pain management solution, including 500 mg of morphine and 60 mg of Endocet daily. Despite these heavy medications, I still suffered over ten pain-related convulsions a day, resembling grand mal seizures.
In Washington State, medical marijuana is legal under a doctor’s care. My doctor and I discovered that its use significantly reduced my seizures from over ten a day to just one or two a week.
However, the Anacortes Housing Authority (AHA) disagreed with my medical use of marijuana and decided to evict us. I filed a lawsuit in state court, but the AHA moved it to federal court, hiding behind the Angel Raich ruling. When I appealed, they returned it to state court to expedite the eviction.
Judge Myers in Mount Vernon, WA, claimed, in open court, that he wouldn’t honor the voter-approved I-692 initiative, bypassing my right to a jury trial and allowing the eviction without waiting for a final ruling under RAP 8.1.
